85202 – 1C: The Future for Subtle Technologies

Bernadette Tesoriero was born in 1961 into an Australian/Italian family. Her entire life she has been surrounded by the facets of food that have been previously discussed (ie. It’s necessity for survival, and its intrinsic cultural position). Despite working full-time as a travel consultant, Bernadette runs a small catering business in her community; during childhood her parents owned a grocer and milk shop. Her life both personally and professionally is entrenched in food and culinary culture.

In her interview Bernadette was asked to read a paper about the formal development of the fork. You can read this paper here. The aim of this interview is to present a technology that is, currently, inherent to the modern dining experience, while also existing on the peripheries of what is considered technology (i.e machinery, electronic devices). Above all that was discussed in this interview, Bernadette’s fascination about how children learn to use cutlery. She displayed particular interesting in the following:

“[the use of the knife and fork] was contrary to the fundamental inhibitions of the child; rather the child, as the 18th century adult did, learned and adjusted to the mould set for them by a larger societal framework.”

There was discussion about how as a child develops they are essentially performing for their guardians in a way that they believe is required of them. What is thought of as nature by adolescence could be actually be a nurtured behaviour.

This thinking was then presented in reference to the plate. Bernadette was posed with the question:

“Having considered this phenomenon related to a fork, could you imagine a similar dynamic for a plate in 2040?”

The intangibility of these concepts is, understandably, quite difficult to fathom and communicate, however; Bernadette’s response mimicked the notions of Mental Construal theory. This theory argues that humans have an intrinsic ability to comprehend past, future, present, and other people’s perspectives. The farther a person or object is removed from a direct experience the more abstract the mental construal. Bernadette was describing an experience where someone, who would otherwise have no understanding of fine dining, is actively partaking in the performance of a dinner setting. A situation where the customer participates in the delivery and formation of a meal, just as much as the chef/cook does.

As such, in contemplating a future scenario where technology has advanced beyond conceivable limits, Bernadette believes that elements such as the fork and plate could develop in their cultural significance and function.

85202 – 1A: The Horizon of Future Studies

In contemplation of the future, Tuomo Kuosa argues that there have been two paradigms that have maintained scholarly hegemony. These two paradigms are determinism and mystic prediction, and indeterministic control based studies (Kuosa 2011). These future methodologies take a individualistic stance when considering humanity’s future, and both can be considered as responses to a respective cultural status quo; the second of these paradigms, Kuosa argues, was brought forth after World War II by the US, whereby in response to the indeterminant nature of war, thinking was cemented in probabilities and external trend analysis. In a like manner, a deterministic futuring paradigm, as a response to a dominant cultural norm, is referenced in literature during periods of history where religion acted as a major agent of change in all facets of society (i.e governance and culture).

Maryisabella Ada Ezeh of the University of Nigeria, writes about Shakespeare’s Macbeth and explores the contention between determinism and a sense of free-will; she argues that this thematic concern of the play is reflective of it’s cultural paradigm. This society is clearly evidenced to favour a deterministic way of thinking, in contrast to modern lines of thinking where the former has little influence.

A third future studies paradigm has emerged that takes a more pluralistic approach. Most of the scholarship surrounding this methodology began toward the end of the 20th century; the early models of Sohail Inayatullah (1990), Wendell Bell (1997), and Jennifer Gidley (2009) have opposed the concept of an individual future. Rather there is an acceptance of multiple, and preferred futures, which allow designers and researchers to take advantage of a range of methods that can generate and reference these multiple futures.  See this post by the World Futures Studies Federation to explore how different models have influenced each other, and have developed a taxonomy of traditions in modern future studies.

When contemplating a future for food, or simply what food can look like in the future, there is a focus on the pertinence of food to a society. What makes food so important that we need to enact futuring methodology? In 2002, The Guardian published an article that countered a general focus, by various health agencies, on obesity. Rather, the fast food industry was presented as an impedance to the social nature of food; it is now “desocialised” and “uncivilising” (Fernandez-Armesto, 2002). This article examples how culture and human nature are major notes of consideration when contemplating a future for food. Fernandez- Armesto positions food beyond its necessity for biological survival.

Future through gaming

For the primary research, I have conducted an interview with a co-worker, Lee Witney, whom is a part time game developer.

The question is…

“How has technology changed over their lifetime? what do you this technology will be like in 2040?” 

According to my co-worker, Witney, the technology will be so integrated into our lives that people will take no notice of it. The current innovations in AR/VR/ will be considered as analogue in 2040 were games will transcend disposable entertainment to become much more meaningful experiences. They will also seamlessly interweave with fashion, food, work, travel, shopping as overlays to our everyday lives. Consoles won’t exist…games will be projected directly into the mind with technology like neural lace (advanced AI that merges with your brain).

Whether it is food or game, this interview provided myself an insight on how future how will be a transcendent experience for everyone and that technology will keep on evolving with us.

Through the research conducted during the scenario project, I have certainly was provided with new knowledge to recognise the pattern of emerging future. By setting the quadrants in thinking and researching about future scenario, it has narrowed it down to specific factors which taught me that future changes according to human needs and protection. 

Our quadrant focused on high tech x extreme climate condition, and it is evident that the extreme climate change plays a huge catalyst as a threat in influencing the society and its city. The change is needed in order to counteract these situations which becomes a building block to design a better future. 

My speculative future scenario evolves around the persona, Mandy Nguyen and her day as a burramandi fish farmer. It gives an insight on her daily activity inside the building. To better understand this speculative future, i have conducted a research to understand the threat, which is how the climate change affects aqua-culture and also recognise our current fish farming methods. The video ‘Catalyst’, exemplifies that in Australia approximately 300 million kilos of seafood are eaten throughout a year and that it is still increasing. The demand is increasing while the climate change are causing fishing to be more difficult specially under high winds and tides etc. 

So to answer the question, I have looked into various futuristic methods on fish production under extreme climate condition. This has lead me to finding out various methods such as Aquapoincs technology which recycles the water. According the research article by Terry Smith, the“oxygen is added to the water and the plants absorb the ammonia and other waste products excreted by the fish”. Because Aquaponics suggets indoor farming the persona is not required to worry about potential pollutions and pests created from climate change. This allows her to produce healthy and chemical free fish without any effort.

Again, through the research of aquaculture and climate change which i have undertaken in my speculative scenario project, my positing towards future has changed more realistically. It is know from the research that it is impossible to continue fishing or operate outdoor fish farm in 2040 and there will be a great demand in meeting people need as the population rises. I no-longer imagine the future to be filled with flying cards and time machine like back to the future, but a future that fulfils societies needs to maintain sustainable living.

Wearable Tech will be the new black

As for part of the group assignment, we came up with a future scenario based on the quadrant, extreme climate change in a highly technological world.  Due to the extreme climate condition, our scenario was developed to counter-face the lack of food resources and production in 2040. Our scenario demonstrates different farming and food production methods adopted by farmers and individuals as well as sustainable power generation to aid them.

Rather then focusing on the food production as the foundation for the prototype, our group dug deeper and specified on the concept of human attitudes and behaviours around food. 

 


 

As the year goes on, technology is becoming more involved in our life than ever before. They are becoming smart, compact and and versatile to fit perfectly into our lifestyle. These emerging technologies are also outsmarting us, were, with just few taps and scrolling, you are able to find the recipe for Michelin star Italian recipes etc.

Such technologies like smartphones became our second brain were they are so involved, we get paranoid if we don’t live a day without one. Thinking about this current technological world with the speculative scenario developed from the previous assignment, it has inspired myself to design a wearable technology that the society in 2040 will possibly have. 

My aim was to create a versatile wearable tech accessory that contribute goods to their world as well as for the users while being fashionable. As lack in food resource is an ongoing issue in our scenario, contributing goods in this instance meant by placing an end to over consumption and wastage.

The above illustrates my initial approach to visualising my prototype. Before coming to wearable tech, i have explored the possible prototype in relation to my man-made fishing farm which was one of the speculative scenario for the previous assignment. i have also looked wearable that could also act as protection from extreme climate condition as in the article ‘Practical Fashion Tech’ it is explained that ‘the weather has been an inspiration for technology development since antiquity.

When developing this prototype, i have considered the similar approach taken in the article, ‘Fashion Futures 2025′ where one has to recognise the threat to take a suitable action to design to protect its future, environment and improve people lives. The treat is society over-consuming food resources. From this, i have imagine a fast reacting alarming system that can help people stop eating. This lead to a wristband that shocks or tightens one’s arm when one reaches its food limit. However, this was a bit extreme so i have changed the alerting system to vibration. The band will record one’s health profile such as height, weight, health conditions etc, therefore, it will know when one goes over the food limit. The diagram above illustrates other feature food – e – band is equipped wit.

Food – e – band fits all the criteria. It is capable of providing the users healthy consumption and eating habit, social interaction with others and customisable aspect maintains its fashionability.

It is truly the new black of 2040.

85202 – 1B: Embracing the Performative Aspects of the Dining Experience

When considering the future, and the methods at hand that allow for prediction, visioning, forecasting (i.e future methodologies), food and it’s production are inextricable factors whose dynamism and intricacies must be considered and ruminated on. Although at centre of political debate, the planet’s changing climate is a major precedent in the urgency placed on governance to facilitate futuring methodology. This blog post will explore the relationship between climate change and food production; achieved through an analysis of the literature that sits at the intersection of climate research, future methodology, and food.

It is argued that the process of futuring and speculative design has immediate impact on the present (Fry, 2009). It can be argued that a consequence of defining the ‘present as future determinant’ is a hegemonic paradigm characterised by an emphasis on quantitative data; the focus on, for example, population (specifically, over population and its consequences), sea levels, CO2 emissions, and waste management. It is not the position of this post to discredit this position, but rather to provide an alternative in the hopes to speculate in a more wholistic and effective fashion. It is the maxim of Design Futuring to speculate beyond the polarity of dystopian and utopian outcomes. As such, in this landscape, designers are reminded that ‘we cannot predict a particular future accurately, by focusing on a range of alternatives, we can better prepare for uncertainty, indeed, to some extent embrace uncertainty’ (Inayatullah 2008, p 6).

Food has constantly been at the centre of cultural dynamism, and there is credence in the connection between the dining experience and this dynamism; it is the way in which we experience food that defines its possibilities. As such, this allows us to pose the question of how can Design Futuring methodology can be utilised upon the dining experience to produce alternatives to a future that seems at the mercy of climate affected food production.

Netflix’s Chef’s Table is an exploration into the machinations of the dining experience – the program examines how different chefs are able to manipulate this experience with reference to their own lives. The trailer for it’s most recent season reveals an exploration with more cultural scope.

This series touches upon a range of cultural themes but the most pertinent to the scope of this research is the conclusion that food exists beyond its necessity for human survival. The basic notions of nutrition are aspects of biological survival, but the references to cultural pride and history are argued to be just as important when contemplating the place for any dining experience in society, upper class or otherwise. This interaction is the foundation for the development of a prototyped plate design that aims to equalize the dining experience; to showcase how food has an intrinsic performative element that all can access.

Farmer’s recipe for sustainability

Do you think cooking book in 50 years time would consist of same ingredients?

Will we be able to cook accessible dish in the future?

Agriculture heavily relies on the environmental condition to grow. When these requirements does not meet, farmers and agricultural workers would not be able to harvest and produce quality food. Due to the rapid climate change, farmers often are faced with inconsistent weather conditions where Bill from the future tense podcast, How to make spaghetti bolognese, stresses that “its the increasing number and intensity of unusual climate events, huge rainfalls, floods as well as droughts that concern him”.  As crops won’t grow sufficiently in these disrupted conditions, livestocks such as cattle and sheep are, at times, left starving. According to Morphet in the recent article on The Daily Telegraph, the recent NSW drought crisis has left the farmer, Les Jones, to have no choice but slaughter 1200 of his starving sheeps. This also comes with an increase in hay and grain prices where little to no farmers are able to purchase them. As Richard Eckard in the report by University of Melbourne says, this will ultimately reduce the production and “raise more heat tolerant cattle which produce lower quality beef ”.

The production of fruit and vegetable are also being disrupted slowly due to the climate condition. The deformed wiggly carrot has been mentioned by Rebecca in the future tense podcast, were the warm weather plays a huge part in carrot in terms of “flavour, texture and physical structure”.

To combat the climate change which are producing nutrient-less deformed vegetables, crops and meat product, agricultural farmers are required to work closely with scientific research and technology. I have found that CSIRO is one of the leading Australian science organisation whom focuses in developing a food processing technology to produce safe and sustainable food.

This includes the development of solar powered monitoring tool for livestock where, according to CSIRO, farmers are able to weight the livestock, monitor body condition and understand their interaction with the environment remotely. These data will help farmers to recognise a certain pattern in managing livestock which will aid them make timely decisions before climate change like droughts takes over.

 

Their SoilMapp app enables farmers to study and find out about soil in their property. This include the amount of water, clay content, quality and physical characteristics etc. The easily accessible information encourages the idea of sustainability of soils into the future.

OECD was another company I have come across whom focus on agricultural management practices with green growth potential. In their report, they have mentioned that ‘Technology for sustainable development must go beyond raising yields to saving water and energy, reducing risk, improving product quality and protecting the environment” (OECD 2016, p14). 

As Rebecca stresses, “Rest of us needs to change like how climate changes.”, it is evident that we will not have the capacity to reverse the damage caused by climate change in the future, however, we can all learn from it and adopt to minimise the effect. With the technologies being developed by CSIRO and green growth approach suggested by OECD, I am certain that it will extend to the agricultural productivity and sustainability to create safer and nutritious produce in the future.

So the ultimate question is, will we be able to recreate the same food in the future? Personally, I believe we can. With a help of technology and scientific research, we can preserve the same ingredient and recipe for the future generation to enjoy.
